The Conservative Party faces criticism for proposing benefit cuts while overseeing an increase in the welfare bill. Former Work and Pensions Secretary Sir Mel Stride intends to reduce disability benefits for individuals with mild mental health conditions and restrict welfare access for non-British citizens to save £23 billion.
Labour sources highlight Sir Mel Stride’s past role in significantly boosting benefits spending while questioning his current proposals. Plans also include reinstating the controversial two-child benefit limit and reducing foreign aid by £7 billion, aiming to reduce civil service numbers and cut spending.
Despite promises to cut numbers, civil service staff have increased to 517,000 from 384,000 in 2016. Additionally, there are plans to reduce green spending, such as subsidies for heat pumps and electric vehicles. In a speech at the Tory conference in Manchester, Sir Mel claims his party is the most reliable on economic matters.
Critics point out past economic failures, including Liz Truss’s 2022 budget causing mortgage bill increases. The party is urged to avoid financial irresponsibility, with the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats expressing skepticism towards the proposed benefit cuts and spending reductions. Aid organizations condemn further cuts to the UK aid budget, citing negative impacts on vulnerable communities worldwide.
