“UK’s Robin Elt Shoes Closing After 153 Years”

Published on

One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers is set to close a high street store in Worcester after serving customers for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut its doors on January 10, 2026. Despite this closure, the brand’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operations as usual.

In a statement, Managing Director Jenny Elt expressed deep sadness over the closure, attributing it to the store’s lack of financial sustainability. She emphasized the challenging decision, noting the impossibility of sustaining the business due to financial constraints.

The closure reflects a broader trend of shifting consumer behavior towards online shopping and a transition of town centers to more leisure and entertainment-oriented spaces. Worcester City Council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has been actively supporting city center traders. The city boasts a unique shopping mix that includes both popular high street brands and independent retailers, with ongoing efforts to enhance the area’s appeal and accessibility through significant investments.

In a related development, charity shop chain Scope has closed three additional high street branches, aligning with its plan to shut down 77 shops this year. The affected stores in Morden, Torquay, and Washington are part of the closures announced earlier in response to projected financial losses. Scope anticipates potential redundancies for around 200 retail staff and impacts on approximately 2,000 volunteers.

Debbie Boylen, Scope’s Head of Retail, expressed regret over the closures, highlighting the critical role of the shops in supporting the charity’s work with disabled individuals and their families. The affected stores in Morden, Torquay, and Washington ceased operations on Saturday, December 6.

As consumer preferences and market dynamics continue to evolve, businesses and organizations are adapting to meet changing demands and ensure financial sustainability.
