Eight companies are under scrutiny for their online pricing practices, with an additional 100 businesses expected to receive warnings in the near future.
The companies currently under investigation include StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is focusing on how fees are displayed online, potential misrepresentation of time-limited offers, and whether customers are being automatically enrolled in optional charges.
Specifically, StubHub and Viagogo are being investigated for additional charges related to ticket purchases, while AA Driving School and BSM Driving School are under scrutiny for fee transparency on their websites.
Gold’s Gym is being examined for its handling of a one-time membership fee presentation during the sign-up process, Wayfair for time-limited sales, Marks Electrical for default opt-ins, and Appliances Direct for their use of time-limited sales and default opt-ins.
The CMA emphasized that while there are suspicions of consumer law violations by these companies, no final decisions have been reached yet.
These investigations mark the initial utilization of the CMA’s new consumer protection powers. The authority is also reaching out to 100 other businesses to address concerns regarding additional fees and sales strategies.

Businesses found to violate consumer law will face consequences as the CMA continues its efforts to safeguard consumer interests and promote fair practices.
Representatives from AA Driving School and Viagogo expressed their willingness to cooperate with the CMA’s investigations.
The Mirror has reached out to Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Marks Electrical, and Appliances Direct for comments, noting that BSM Driving School is affiliated with the AA, while Viagogo and StubHub share a parent company.
