A 71-year-old man, Phil Appleton, who was a former British Airways pilot, engaged in a three-year harassment campaign against actress Anna Friel, making her feel threatened and shocked. He sent her sexual messages, visited her home, and left unwanted gifts between January 1, 2022, and December 11, 2024. Appleton, with a history of mental health issues, sought advice on how to communicate with Friel to avoid being labeled a stalker.
Friel, known for her roles in various TV series, including Brookside and Marcella, encountered Appleton during a walk with her daughter in Windsor. Initially, she thought they had worked together before. Appleton, however, began sending emails professing his love for Friel, escalating his obsession over time. He even showed up at her home dressed in a dinner jacket, inviting her to events and leaving gifts.
The situation reached a breaking point when Appleton was caught looking through Friel’s window and handing an empty pack of cigarettes to her daughter. Following his arrest in December 2024, Appleton was admitted to a mental health facility and later received a restraining order for 15 years and a 24-month community order.
Despite expressing remorse for his actions, Appleton’s behavior caused significant distress to Friel, highlighting the serious impact of stalking on individuals. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing such behavior and seeking support for victims of harassment.
