“Millions Missing Out on £441 Monthly Benefit”

Published on

Approximately 1.1 million individuals may be overlooking the opportunity to apply for Attendance Allowance, a benefit that can amount to £441 per month.

According to recent data from Policy in Practice, people are encouraged to assess their potential eligibility for additional assistance. Attendance Allowance is designated for individuals above the state pension age who require extra support or supervision due to a disability or illness.

Qualification criteria include experiencing extended periods or discomfort while performing daily tasks, with support needed for at least six months due to a medical condition.

The benefit is paid every four weeks by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with amounts ranging from £73.90 to £110.40 weekly, depending on the level of assistance required during the day, night, or both. It is not mandatory to have a caregiver to be eligible for Attendance Allowance.

The funds can be utilized for services like transportation or housekeeping to maintain independence. Notifying the DWP of any changes in circumstances is crucial, as it may impact the amount of Attendance Allowance received.

Attendance Allowance is not subject to means-testing, savings limitations, or taxation, and it exempts recipients from benefit caps. Moreover, other benefits might see an increase if one becomes eligible for Attendance Allowance, though it cannot be combined with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

In Scotland, Attendance Allowance has been replaced by Pension Age Disability Payment.

To apply for Attendance Allowance, individuals can either submit the claim form by mail to Freepost DWP Attendance Allowance or contact the Attendance Allowance helpline for assistance.

Applicants must detail how their condition impacts their daily life on the form and provide supporting documents such as medical records, care plans, or prescriptions. Some applicants may need to undergo an assessment before receiving Attendance Allowance, except for terminally ill individuals who qualify for the higher rate without assessment.
