A British cyclist was discovered deceased while riding in a popular vacation spot, leading to a police inquiry. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was cycling on a road racer in the residential vicinity of Gran Alacant, situated just south of the city of Alicante. The incident occurred yesterday morning on Mediterranean Avenue, a bustling road adjacent to the sea near Carabassi Beach, a well-liked scenic spot.
Upon the incident, local authorities, Civil Guard officers, and emergency medical personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene. Despite their efforts, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the location. Witnesses reported that the cyclist fell off his bike while ascending a hill, ruling out a collision with a vehicle as the cause of the mishap.
Reports from a local newspaper in Santa Pola, where the incident took place, revealed that authorities are investigating whether the cyclist may have experienced a sudden health complication. Civil Guard officers were seen retrieving the Cannondale racing bike from a grassy area by the roadside.
Details regarding whether the cyclist was a resident or a tourist in the area have not been clarified yet. Notably, there was a similar tragedy in April when a British cyclist lost his life during a renowned amateur race in Majorca.
In a separate incident the following month, a 54-year-old British woman sustained serious injuries in a bicycle accident on the same holiday island. The woman was hurt near the mountain village of Fornalutx in the north-west region of Majorca while cycling on the Ma-10 road.
