“Smaller Mobile Networks Outperform Big Four, Which? Report Reveals”

Published on

A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that despite the widespread use of major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, these providers are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The study, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicates that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

According to Which?, the survey aimed to assess which mobile providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are falling behind. The results show that the leading traditional providers, known as the “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone, continue to trail many smaller rivals.

The top-ranking networks identified in the report include Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major players, EE performed the best, securing the ninth position, while O2 and Three ranked lower.

Price emerged as a significant factor highlighted in the research. Customers on the Big Four networks were found to pay an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks paid just £9 on average.

Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, service coverage remains comparable as many of them utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring customers can access similar signal quality without the premium associated with well-known brands.

The report also points out that switching providers is simpler than commonly perceived, with some customers able to transition to a different network in as little as 10 minutes. One member of Which? shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to a cheaper SMARTY plan, saving around £200 annually.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outshine major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers approaching the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers offering better value and improved services.

The rankings from Which? show Talkmobile leading with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile (81%), Giffgaff (79%), SMARTY (79%), and Voxi (79%). The ratings also include other providers such as 1p Mobile (78%), Lebara (78%), Asda Mobile (77%), EE (74%), iD Mobile (73%), Sky Mobile (73%), Vodafone (72%), Lycamobile (68%), O2 (67%), and Three (65%).
