“Pro-Palestine Protesters Attach Themselves to Van Outside Drone Factory”

Published on

Police have closed off several roads as demonstrators in support of Palestine gathered outside a drone factory and reportedly attached themselves to the top of a van.

Leicestershire Police responded to the incident at UAV Tactical Systems in Braunstone Town early this morning after receiving a call just before 5:15 am. Upon arrival, officers found a van that had apparently collided with bollards near the factory. Some individuals were said to have fastened themselves to the top of the van and others to a fence.

A 24-year-old woman has been taken into custody on suspicion of engaging in “lock-on” activities, a tactic where protesters secure themselves to structures. Police remain on the scene managing the situation, leading to the closure of public access to routes near the business park, including Meridian East to Centurion Way.

Reports from a local resident indicated seeing smoke emanating from the location around 7 am. The cause of the smoke remains unknown, although the presence of the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service at the scene has been confirmed.

The group People Against Genocide, which identifies as a pro-Palestine direct action organization, has claimed responsibility for the morning’s demonstrations. They alleged that the majority shareholder of UAV Tactical Systems, Elbit Systems, is a major arms supplier to Israel. In response, a spokesperson for UAV Tactical Systems clarified that the company does not provide military support to Israel.

In a statement, Leicestershire Police described the events that transpired, emphasizing their support for peaceful protests and swift action against criminal activities and property damage. This incident is not the first time protesters have targeted the UAV factory, with past demonstrations organized by various groups, including a funeral-style procession in May.
