“Virgin Media O2 Warns of Rising Scam Threat”

Published on

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned to stay vigilant as a concerning new scam is on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert after noticing a significant increase in fake call center numbers being distributed by artificial intelligence (AI).

Reports indicate that millions may have already fallen victim to calling these fraudulent numbers, connecting them to cybercriminals seeking to steal personal information, such as banking details.

It is estimated that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools, as criminals exploit AI technology to present deceptive contact information for trusted brands. This deceptive tactic aims to deceive individuals and facilitate fraud.

With the reliance on AI-generated search results growing, individuals are more likely to trust these results, providing hackers with an opportunity to carry out their malicious activities undetected.

To safeguard against such scams, Virgin Media advises customers to strictly use authentic service numbers listed on official websites, apps, or bills. For inquiries related to O2, customers can call 202 from an O2 device, and for Virgin Media, the contact number is 150 from a landline.

Additionally, individuals are urged to exercise caution when dealing with numbers obtained from search engines, social media platforms, or AI tools. It is crucial never to disclose security codes or personal information to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claims.

Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the risks associated with AI tools enabling fraudsters to create convincing fake numbers, urging vigilance among consumers. The company is actively working to protect customers by blocking known scam numbers and leveraging AI to identify suspicious calls. Reporting suspicious numbers to 7726 can aid in shutting down scams promptly.

In conclusion, remaining cautious, verifying contact details from official sources, and promptly reporting suspicious activities are crucial steps in safeguarding against fraudulent schemes in the digital age.
