A man in Spring Hills, Florida, was taken into custody following the hospitalization of his elderly mother, who was found covered in human waste and infested with maggots. Jason Thomas Russell, 47, contacted emergency services after discovering his 79-year-old mother bleeding from an elbow wound at their residence on September 18. He reported to dispatchers that she appeared conscious but in a critical state.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical staff were shocked by the elderly woman’s deplorable physical condition, which included numerous open sores and a maggot infestation. Tragically, she passed away two days after being admitted. When Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene, Russell reportedly obstructed their access to the property, preventing them from reaching his mother’s necessary medication.
Russell was apprehended for obstructing law enforcement efforts to secure the crime scene. During police interrogation, he claimed his mother had refused any assistance from him and had deteriorated over the past six months. He confessed that she had declined medical treatment despite his efforts to persuade her.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson revealed that Russell was his mother’s primary caregiver. Law enforcement officers found the residence in a state of disarray, with heavily soiled furniture, a strong odor of ammonia, and unhygienic living conditions. Russell admitted to unconventional methods of caring for his mother, including using a pool or cloth to bathe her.
Subsequently, Russell was charged with elder abuse and neglect, as well as resisting law enforcement without violence. He is currently detained at the Hernando County Detention Center and is scheduled for arraignment at the end of the upcoming month.
