In the early hours of January 14, 2009, authorities responded to a distressed call from a residence in the suburbs. Marissa Devault urgently sought assistance before the call abruptly ended. In subsequent calls, she mentioned being strangled by someone in the house.
This incident marked the first time the mother of three, residing in Phoenix, Arizona, recounted the harrowing events that transpired in her home. However, her recount of the events varied multiple times. Upon arrival, responders found Devault in a distraught state with blood covering her head.
Upstairs, her husband, Dale Harrell, lay naked on the bedroom floor with a severe head injury. Despite the grave condition, paramedics managed to transport him to the hospital for treatment.
Initially, Devault claimed that Dale had attacked her in her sleep, and another individual, Stanley Cook Jr., intervened using a hammer to save her. However, inconsistencies arose as the crime scene evidence contradicted their statements.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Dale, with severe skull fractures, was alone in bed during the attack, and Devault’s well-maintained nails suggested no signs of struggle. In a later interview, Devault confessed to using the hammer on her husband while he slept before Stanley intervened.
She alleged that her actions were in response to her husband’s alleged sexual assault, which triggered her anger. Unfortunately, Dale succumbed to his injuries a month after the assault.
The case, narrated by a YouTuber named Adrian on the Coffeehouse Crime channel, shed light on the background of Dale and Devault’s relationship from high school to their marriage. Devault’s work history, including dancing at a club due to financial struggles, and Dale’s career in mechanical engineering were also highlighted.
Despite outward appearances of a normal family, the tragic event exposed Devault’s hidden life. She was later charged with first-degree premeditated murder and faced allegations of financial gain and a secret affair.
After a lengthy legal battle, Devault was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. During the sentencing, she expressed remorse for her actions and the pain inflicted on Dale’s family.
