Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced to 5 Years for Conspiracy

Published on

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has received a five-year prison sentence for criminal conspiracy. The Paris Judicial Court delivered the verdict, imposing a five-year jail term and a €100,000 fine on the 70-year-old. Despite planning to appeal the ruling, Sarkozy is expected to serve the sentence, as per local media reports.

According to Le Monde, part of the sentence requires Sarkozy to appear before the prosecutor’s office within a month to be informed of his incarceration date, with his appeal not halting the enforcement of the verdict. The charges against him stem from illegal financing linked to his 2007 presidential campaign, allegedly supported by funds from the Libyan government under then-leader Moammar Gadhafi.

While found guilty of criminal association regarding campaign funding from 2005 to 2007, Sarkozy was acquitted of other accusations like passive corruption and illegal campaign financing. The court also cleared him of concealing the misappropriation of public funds.

The offense of criminal association carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, with prosecutors seeking a seven-year term. Additionally, Sarkozy’s former ministers Claude Gueant and Brice Hortefeux were also found guilty of criminal association but acquitted of other charges related to the scheme.

The verdict highlights the court’s belief that Sarkozy and his associates collaborated to seek Libyan funding for his campaign, but doubts lingered about the direct involvement of the former president in orchestrating the scheme. Sarkozy, standing in court alongside his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and their three adult sons, was admonished by Judge Nathalie Gavarino for enabling his associates to seek financial support from the Libyan regime.

Throughout the trial, Sarkozy vehemently denied any wrongdoing, rejecting the allegations of receiving illegal funds from Libya. The accusations surfaced in 2011 when reports emerged of secret financial support from the Libyan government for Sarkozy’s campaign. Despite the controversies and legal battles, Sarkozy persisted in dismissing the claims as politically motivated and unfounded.

The trial not only scrutinized Sarkozy’s alleged ties to Gadhafi’s regime but also shed light on France’s diplomatic engagements with Libya during the tumultuous period when Gadhafi sought to mend ties with Western nations. Sarkozy’s proactive stance on Gadhafi’s removal during the Arab Spring protests in 2011 added a political dimension to the case, with the former president attributing the charges to retribution for his anti-Gadhafi stance.

Sarkozy’s legal woes extend beyond this case, with previous convictions for corruption and influence peddling. Despite his appeals and legal battles, Sarkozy’s legal entanglements continue to cast a shadow on his political legacy.
