A man tragically lost his life when he was crushed inside a bin that was emptied into a lorry. The victim, Vitalij Maceljuch, aged 36 and originally from Ukraine, was found inside the bin near a Wren store in Chester. It is believed that he entered the bin and fell asleep before being unknowingly tipped into the Biffa lorry and crushed.
The incident came to light in May last year when workers at the Thorncliffe waste management site in Flintshire discovered his body on a conveyor belt. Initially mistaken for a mannequin, it was later revealed to be Mr. Maceljuch. Authorities reported that he had a history of drug use, with traces of cannabis and amphetamine found in his system.
A Home Office pathologist mentioned that the effects of the substances in his body may have contributed to his death. The Health and Safety Executive confirmed that warning signs were present on the bin, indicating the potential danger. CCTV footage revealed Mr. Maceljuch entering the bin at 4 am, likely due to the drowsiness induced by the drugs he had consumed.
After investigations, it was determined that neither the lorry driver nor the waste companies were at fault for the incident. The coroner concluded that Mr. Maceljuch’s death was a result of misadventure, stating that it likely occurred before he reached the skip site at Alltami on May 10. The tragic event was described as unintentional, stemming from intentional actions that had unforeseen consequences.
This incident draws parallels to the case of RAF airman Corrie McKeague, who went missing in 2016 under similar circumstances. Corrie, a native of Scotland serving at RAF Honington, disappeared after being last seen near Bury St Edmunds. CCTV footage suggested he might have sought shelter in a recycling bin before meeting a similar fate, crushed by a refuse truck and taken to a landfill site miles away.
