A new scheme aimed at WhatsApp users has emerged, potentially granting hackers access to sensitive data. With the constant stream of warnings about various scams and data threats, it’s crucial to prioritize online safety by avoiding suspicious links and unknown software downloads.

As scammers and hackers enhance their tactics, identifying fraudulent text messages or emails can be challenging for the average user. The latest “ghost pairing scam” on WhatsApp is causing concern, urging users to be cautious of any messages they receive on the platform.

A social media user, Caroline, shed light on the scam through a TikTok video, emphasizing the risks of falling for this deceptive ploy that could enable hackers to remotely infiltrate personal data.

In detailing the scam’s operation, Caroline explained, “You may receive a message appearing to be from WhatsApp, seemingly genuine, indicating your account is at risk or needs securing. Alternatively, the message might mimic a contact from your list, stating they sent you a code in error and requesting it back.”

The scam leverages WhatsApp’s feature that links accounts to external devices like laptops. By forwarding the received code as instructed, users unwittingly connect their account to the scammer’s device, granting unauthorized access.

Once a stranger gains entry to your WhatsApp account, they can peruse messages, view sent photos, and even send messages on your behalf, potentially deceiving others in your contact list. Despite this breach, the app may continue to function normally on your device, masking any compromise.

Fortunately, preventative measures can thwart such scams. Never disclose a WhatsApp code to anyone, as the platform never solicits code sharing via text messages. If contacted by a known contact requesting a code, advise them to resend it to their number and refrain from sharing any received codes.

Users can review linked devices in their settings to identify any unfamiliar connections. On Android devices, access Linked Devices via the app’s menu, while on iPhones, navigate to Linked Devices in the settings and promptly disconnect any unrecognized devices.
