Vodafone has introduced a novel method for internet access. Instead of relying on traditional copper or fiber cables, the company’s latest Wi-Fi router operates by downloading files and streaming content through a 5G mobile signal.
This innovation is particularly beneficial for households without access to high-speed fiber connections or for individuals seeking enhanced flexibility. The portability of the device makes it convenient for renters or students who frequently change residences.
One key advantage is the hassle-free setup process. Since it operates on Vodafone’s network, there is no requirement for a technician to visit or perform any drilling. Users can simply plug the router into a power source, switch it on, and immediately connect to the internet.
It’s important to note that this new system offers speeds of up to 150Mbps, suitable for activities like streaming movies on platforms such as Netflix, sending emails, and working from home. However, it falls short of the higher speeds achievable with full fiber connections, which can exceed 900Mbps.
For instance, downloading a full HD movie using this 5G router would take approximately 8 minutes, compared to just 40 seconds with a fiber gigabit connection. To assist consumers in making informed decisions, Vodafone has launched an integrated availability checker on their website to help users determine the best connection for their needs based on their postcode.
This is not the first time Vodafone has provided internet access via 5G technology. The previous GigaCube device has been replaced by this new router. Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, emphasized the importance of offering fast and reliable broadband options to households currently experiencing slower speeds.
Vodafone’s pricing starts at £21 per month, while Three, now part of Vodafone, offers a similar service for £11 during the initial nine months. This move aims to provide customers with a choice between full fiber where available and powerful 5G broadband where fiber is not accessible, catering to those seeking speed, ease, and flexibility in their internet connections.
