The Vancouver Rise have received additional support with the recent signings of two defenders. These acquisitions come just in time for a crucial match against the Halifax Tides. Chantelle Swaby, formerly of Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, who previously played for NSL side AFC Toronto, have joined the Rise.

Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller expressed confidence in the new additions, highlighting Swaby’s physical presence and playing abilities, as well as Hansen’s fit into the team’s style of play and her eagerness to make an impact as a center-back. Swaby, 28, brings a wealth of experience from various leagues, including the National Women’s Soccer League and top divisions in Scotland and France.

Swaby emphasized her role in bringing calmness and leadership to the team’s defense, while Hansen, 26, shared her excitement about returning home to play for the Rise and being close to her family once again. These signings follow the retirement of Mariah Lee, who chose to pursue law school in New York, and the loaning of goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan to the Tides for the remainder of the season.

With the Rise aiming to secure a playoff spot, currently trailing Halifax by five points, the team is focused on the crucial stretch ahead. Forward Jessica De Fillippo acknowledged the importance of this period, expressing the team’s determination to showcase their competitiveness and earn a place in the postseason.
