Millions of people in the UK are expected to experience heavy rainfall over the weekend due to the aftermath of Hurricane Gabrielle.
According to recent weather maps from WXCharts, a band of rain is forecasted to move eastward over Northern Ireland and then into Scotland, northern England, and parts of Wales. By midday on Saturday, approximately 5mm of rain is predicted to fall in Belfast, the surrounding areas, and the western coastal regions of Scotland.
Later in the day, the rain band will shift westward, bringing around 5mm of rain, with some areas in the Highlands expecting about 2mm. By evening, southern and western Scotland, along with parts of southwestern Wales, are likely to receive 5mm of rainfall.
Fortunately, by Sunday, most of the heavy rainfall is expected to have passed over the UK, although scattered instances may still occur across the country. Meanwhile, Hurricane Gabrielle is heading towards the Iberian Peninsula, causing authorities in the Azores to implement a limited shutdown and issue warnings to residents.
The hurricane has brought strong winds of up to 65 miles per hour to the islands, accompanied by heavy rainfall. The storm is anticipated to intensify before making landfall in Portugal on Sunday.
The effects of Hurricane Gabrielle will be felt as far north as the UK, with the Met Office forecasting persistent rain in Scotland before it moves towards England and Wales. The Met Office’s Saturday forecast mentions continuous rain in Scotland, transitioning eastward across Wales and England, with some sunny spells in the southeast.
Looking ahead to Sunday to Tuesday, the Met Office predicts outbreaks of rain stalling over southern England on Sunday, followed by brighter skies and scattered showers on Monday. Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday, with the possibility of showers.
Overall, relatively settled conditions are anticipated towards the end of the month and into early October, although the northwest of the country may experience cloudier weather with occasional outbreaks of rain and drizzle.
While showers or longer periods of rain may affect all areas at times during the week, the wettest weather is likely to concentrate in the northwest of the country, accompanied by potentially windier conditions.
