A TUI flight traveling from the UK to Cyprus had to change its course following an emergency situation caused by a “bird strike.” The incident took place at 4:30 pm on Sunday as the Boeing 737, with flight number TOM 6754, departed from Cardiff en route to Paphos, Cyprus. Due to the emergency, the flight was redirected to Birmingham.
Emergency services were on standby at Birmingham Airport as the aircraft landed after circling Swansea Bay at 3,000ft and then climbing to 12,000ft before heading towards the West Midlands. Passengers and crew safely disembarked at 5:30 pm after the plane circled to burn off fuel before landing, where it was met by fire appliances and other emergency vehicles.
A spokesperson from TUI confirmed that the bird strike occurred shortly after take-off from Cardiff Airport but emphasized that there was no engine failure. The diversion to Birmingham was a precautionary measure.
Cardiff Airport acknowledged the incident involving flight TOM6754, stating that passenger safety is their top priority. The plane landed safely at Birmingham Airport around 5:30 pm.
Recently, Birmingham Airport experienced delays and diversions due to an incident involving a light aircraft on the runway, causing one person to be injured. The runway closure led to flight disruptions and closures of security and check-in operations.
West Midlands Police reported that a small aircraft made an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport, resulting in minor injuries to one person. The Mirror has reached out to TUI for further comments.
