“Tragic Plane Crash Claims Five Lives at Miami Airport”

Published on

Five individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident at Miami International Airport when an Amazon cargo plane veered off the runway on Sunday. The victims were passengers in a van operated by a cleaning company, which was struck by an SUV outside the airport premises, according to the Chairperson of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Jennifer Homendy, during a briefing on Monday.

Homendy described the crash site as “utter devastation,” noting the extensive damage caused by the Boeing 767’s path, including tire marks on the grass, a destroyed van, damaged fencing, and the SUV. The van, owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., was carrying seven individuals at the time and was severely damaged in the collision.

NTSB investigators have recovered both the voice and data recorders from the aircraft and are analyzing the information. Further details, including the aircraft’s speed from the flight data recorder, are expected to be released by the NTSB on Tuesday.

The investigation is focusing on whether the plane landed too late to come to a stop safely. The Miami airport does not have engineered material arresting systems (EMAS) in place, which are designed to prevent planes from overshooting runways. The NTSB will explore whether the absence of EMAS played a role in the tragic outcome of the Amazon cargo plane incident.

The history of the aircraft, a 32-year-old Boeing 767 that was converted into a cargo plane in 2015, will also be scrutinized, particularly its maintenance records and previous ownership. The crash disrupted operations at Miami International Airport, with two runways remaining closed following the incident.

Amazon expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The company stated its deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the impact of the tragic event on all those affected.
