A prominent figure in the climbing community tragically passed away while live-streaming his ascent of a well-known rock formation, prompting his grieving mother to share her heartache over the devastating turn of events.
Balin Miller, aged 23, met his demise on Wednesday while climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. El Capitan, a towering granite rock face that attracts climbers from around the globe, stands at an impressive height of roughly 3,000 feet (915 meters).
Expressing profound sorrow, Jeanine Girard-Moorman, the climber’s mother, revealed, “He’s been climbing since he was a young boy. His heart and soul was truly to just climb. He loved to climb and it was never about money and fame.” Balin’s untimely death adds to a series of fatalities involving social media personalities engaged in daring acts, such as a Tiktoker and a skydiver who met similar fates.
Taking to Facebook, she mournfully announced, “It is with a heavy heart I have to tell you my incredible son Balin Miller died during a climbing accident today. My heart is shattered in a million pieces. I don’t know how I will get through this. I love him so much. I want to wake up from this horrible nightmare.”
Numerous individuals paid tribute to Balin on social media, recalling watching his TikTok livestream prior to the tragic incident and affectionately dubbing him “orange tent guy” due to his distinctive camping setup.
While the exact circumstances remain unclear, Balin’s older brother, Dylan Miller, disclosed that Balin was engaged in lead rope soloing, a method of climbing independently while secured by a rope, on a route known as Sea of Dreams, spanning 2,400 feet (730 meters). After completing the climb, Balin was in the process of retrieving his gear when he likely descended off the end of his rope, according to Dylan.
Renowned for his achievements in alpinism, Balin had previously garnered international recognition for his solo conquest of Mount McKinley’s Slovak Direct, a challenging route that took him 56 hours to conquer, as shared on his Instagram account in June.
Having grown up immersed in climbing alongside his brother and father in Alaska, Balin’s passion for the sport was unparalleled. His love for climbing was evident in his unique approach, often adorning glitter freckles on his cheeks before embarking on climbs, likening it to a warrior preparing for battle.
