The Toronto Tempo of the WNBA introduced their highly anticipated mascots during a game on Tuesday, but the response from fans has been mixed. Dez the snapping turtle and Dot the Arctic hare, inspired by Aesop’s fable about a race between the two animals, have contrasting personalities and tempos. Despite their differences, they share the role of mascots for Canada’s sole WNBA team.
Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is known for being composed, enjoying music, soft-shell tacos, and being a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, originating from Toronto, is full of energy, likes cotton candy, the Netflix F1 documentary series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their unique bond formed when Dot followed the northern lights to Dez’s territory, realizing their compatibility.
According to the Tempo’s news release, Dez and Dot bonded over their shared love of rhythm, each contributing distinct qualities to their dynamic duo. The pair eventually found their way to Toronto, drawn by the city’s vibrant pulse.
However, like many new mascots, they have faced criticism from some residents. Some fans expressed disappointment in the design and choice of mascots, comparing them unfavorably to the iconic Raptor, the Toronto Raptors’ mascot.
While some found the mascots’ appearances unsettling, others appreciated the concept of the tortoise and the hare theme. The Tempo’s chief marketing officer emphasized the mascots’ Canadian identity, although some critics felt they did not fully represent Toronto.
Despite the mixed reactions, a few fans expressed admiration for the mascots, appreciating the symbolism behind their characters. Speculation about their relationship and sexuality circulated amongst fans, with some wondering if they were romantically involved. However, a report clarified that Dez and Dot are simply best friends and not siblings or dating.
As the Tempo navigates their inaugural season, marked by a challenging 12-game losing streak, they hope that their new mascots will bring them luck. The team’s recent defeat by the Washington Mystics dashed their playoff hopes for the season.
