Millions of households are being advised to consider changing their energy provider due to a recent increase in winter energy prices. The regulatory body, Ofgem, has raised the price cap by 2%, resulting in the average annual gas and electricity bill reaching £1,755. This hike coincides with the colder weather, leading to higher energy consumption at the increased rates.
Experts suggest that approximately 34 million customers currently on a standard variable tariff, affected by the price cap, could save significantly by switching to a fixed-rate deal instead. According to MoneySuperMarket, switching to a fixed deal could save the average customer up to £271, with the cheapest deals in the market ranging between £1,429 to £1,643.
Laura Hinton from MoneySuperMarket Energy highlighted that a majority of households, around 66%, are on a standard variable rate, facing increased bills during the winter months as energy usage rises. Similarly, Emily Seymour, the energy editor at Which?, emphasized the importance of exploring cheaper deals below the current price cap, preferably with shorter terms and minimal exit fees.
Debt charity StepChange reported a 32% rise in energy-related arrears among its clients in the past two years. Simon Trevethick, the head of communications, mentioned that the combination of colder weather and higher bills is putting additional financial strain on households.
Looking ahead, industry experts at Cornwall Insight anticipate a slight decrease in the price cap to £1,725 per year for a typical dual fuel household starting in January. However, the forecast also includes a projected increase of £100 in April of the following year. Minister for Energy Consumers, Martin McCluskey, highlighted government initiatives to support vulnerable families during winter, such as expanding the Warm Home Discount and launching home upgrade programs.
For those reluctant to switch providers, it is recommended to inquire about fixed deals from their current provider. MoneySuperMarket presents various options, including a Fair Variable Dual tariff and fixed deals from providers like Outfox Energy and E.on Next. Uswitch also features competitive deals from different suppliers to help consumers find the best energy plan for their needs.
Additionally, the Energy Saving Trust offers cost-effective tips to save on energy bills without switching providers. Simple actions like installing draught proofing strips, bleeding radiators, and optimizing heating controls can lead to significant savings on energy costs. Insulation upgrades, like cavity or solid wall insulation, can also make a substantial impact on home energy efficiency and comfort.
