“Suspicious Object Explosion Shuts Down German Train Station”

Published on

An explosion close to a train station in Germany led to a temporary closure of the transport hub in Augsburg on Wednesday morning due to a suspicious object being discovered. Police later confirmed that the object was harmless, and the train station reopened at 10 a.m., with train services resuming.

Authorities reported an unidentified object exploding near the station’s passageway around 3:15 a.m., causing minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens. A second suspicious object, which did not explode, was found at the main train station, prompting the station’s shutdown at 8:30 a.m.

Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were on-site investigating the incident. Police spokesperson Timo Küfner mentioned that it was too early to determine a motive for the explosion but assured that investigations were ongoing.

The disruption affected road traffic and public transportation near the station in the early morning hours. Reports suggested that a hand grenade detonated in front of a jewelry store, with the train station not being the primary target.

Augsburg, with a population of 308,000 residents in Bavaria, is located approximately 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. This incident follows Germany attributing a recent drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, resulting in the closure of a Russian consulate and other measures against Moscow. The drone, laden with explosives, was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft and safely defused, raising concerns about heightened risks posed by such incidents.

Western officials have accused Moscow of conducting disruptive activities across Europe to destabilize nations and undermine support for Ukraine.
