A recent study suggests that consuming any amount of alcohol may elevate the risk of developing dementia. The research challenges the notion that light drinking could have positive effects on brain health and proposes that reducing alcohol intake at a population level could be crucial in preventing dementia. The study, conducted by experts from the University of Oxford, Yale University, and the University of Cambridge, analyzed data from over half a million participants in the UK Biobank and US Million Veteran Programme.
During the study period, 14,540 individuals developed dementia. The research revealed that both non-drinkers and heavy drinkers (consuming 40 or more drinks per week) had a 41% higher risk of dementia compared to light drinkers who consumed less than seven alcoholic beverages weekly. For those with alcohol dependency, the risk increased to 51%. Genetic analysis using data from genome-wide association studies of dementia involving 2.4 million people supported these findings.
The study assessed three alcohol consumption measures – self-reported weekly drinks, risky drinking behavior, and alcohol dependence – to understand their impact on dementia risk. The results indicated that a higher genetic predisposition for alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of dementia. Dr. Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical researcher at Oxford Population Health and consultant psychiatrist, emphasized that even light or moderate drinking could elevate dementia risk, underscoring the potential role of reducing alcohol consumption in dementia prevention.
Dr. Joel Gelernter, a professor at Yale University and the senior author of the study published in BMJ Evidence Based Medicine, noted that the findings provide valuable insights into the link between alcohol and dementia, with significant clinical implications. He highlighted the misconception that light drinking could benefit brain health and suggested that this study refutes that belief.
According to Alzheimer’s Society, nearly one million people in the UK have dementia, a number expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. Dr. Stephen Burgess, a statistician at the University of Cambridge, pointed out that the study’s genetic approach enables a clearer understanding of the relationship between alcohol consumption and dementia risk, emphasizing that higher alcohol intake is associated with an increased risk of dementia for individuals with varying genetic backgrounds.
Dr. Leah Mursaleen, head of clinical research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, emphasized the study’s significance in highlighting the correlation between alcohol consumption and dementia risk, with higher consumption levels posing greater risks. She stressed the need for further research to explore the impact of alcohol on brain health and develop intervention strategies to mitigate dementia risk. Given the current lack of effective treatments for dementia, promoting practices that support good brain health is crucial.
