“Studio Reset: New Indie Game Venture Shakes Up Gaming Scene”

Published on

A fresh independent game development studio, Studio Reset, has emerged with a team of three members who bring their expertise from renowned game companies to navigate the challenging gaming industry. The studio, based in Edmonton, was founded this year by Kaelin Lavallee, Kris Schoneberg, and Francis Lacuna, who previously collaborated at Bioware, known for creating popular titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Lavallee, the creative director, departed Bioware in 2015 and ventured through various game companies before establishing Studio Reset to delve deeper into the creative and production aspects of game development. The trend of experienced individuals from larger studios branching out to form independent game ventures is evident in recent Canadian game releases like Ambrosia Sky and Reply All, crafted by teams with backgrounds in major gaming studios.

Studio Reset’s inaugural game, The Eventide, is a supernatural mystery set in a “neon-noir” Canadian environment, drawing inspiration from classic series like The X-Files and narrative puzzle games. Players will select investigators from a diverse pool to unravel unsolved cases, with each character providing unique perspectives on the mysteries, reminiscent of the dynamics between Mulder and Scully in The X-Files.

According to Paul Fogolin, president of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, the symbiotic relationship between AAA studios and indie developers contributes to a more resilient gaming industry. While large studios offer resources and expertise, indie studios bring innovation and fresh ideas to the gaming landscape.

The risk-reward dynamic of indie game development is exemplified by success stories like Red Barrels, founded by Philippe Morin after leaving established studios to focus on hands-on game creation. Despite the risks involved in launching independent games without the marketing prowess of AAA companies, indie studios like Studio Reset strive to attract audiences through unique offerings tailored to niche markets.

The emergence of new indie studios like Phantom Rowboat, born from the fallout of job losses in established companies like Ubisoft Halifax, highlights the entrepreneurial spirit driving the indie game scene. These studios aim for long-term sustainability and stability, bucking industry trends to carve out their niche in the competitive global gaming market.
