During a tumultuous Saturday afternoon at Bethpage Black, American Stoll, McIlroy’s wife, faced repeated heckling and even had a plastic beer glass thrown at her. This led to additional police and security measures being implemented, with McIlroy jokingly suggesting that dogs should have been unleashed to control the situation.
As the highest-ranked European player, McIlroy was a prime target for American fans throughout the tournament. Despite facing distractions during his rounds, he managed to secure 3.5 points for Europe before eventually succumbing to Scottie Scheffler in the singles match.
McIlroy, accompanied by his father Gerry in the crowd, expressed his disappointment at the abuse directed towards his family, emphasizing that such behavior should be off-limits.
