Snooker icon Ronnie O’Sullivan has disclosed his deliberate shift towards a more discerning approach in selecting his engagements, recognizing the finite nature of his illustrious career. This strategic adjustment translates to a reduction in exhibition matches for the renowned player, who is now channeling his energies predominantly into competitive tournaments.
Approaching his 50th birthday in December, O’Sullivan, a seven-time world champion, recently clinched victory at The Crucible in 2022. While he opted out of several events in the ongoing 2025/26 season, he did manage to secure a spot in the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in August, albeit narrowly losing to Neil Robertson.
Although exhibition games offer substantial financial rewards for top players, O’Sullivan, cognizant of his career’s twilight phase, has opted to prioritize competitive play over these lucrative side engagements.
In his own words, O’Sullivan revealed, “I made a conscious decision to step back from the exhibition circuit and focus on tournament play. Balancing both was proving to be excessively demanding.” Despite acknowledging the enjoyment derived from exhibitions, he recognized the strain it imposed alongside competitive commitments.
Expressing awareness of his career’s impending conclusion, O’Sullivan shared, “I realize I am likely nearing the end of my tenure in the sport. If I manage another two years, it would be a bonus. Securing sponsorships has alleviated financial pressures, allowing me to forego exhibition matches.”
Following a relocation to Dubai to streamline his tournament attendance in Asia and mitigate jetlag issues, O’Sullivan is gearing up for the upcoming Xi’an Grand Prix in China, building on his semi-final appearance in the same event last year.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, the 49-year-old emphasized the pivotal role of sponsor support in sustaining his competitive journey, emphasizing his renewed focus on tournament readiness and rekindling his passion for the game.
While O’Sullivan’s move away from the UK was a recent development, it had been under consideration for some time, with the snooker maestro contemplating a fresh chapter in a different locale following his World Snooker Championship semi-final defeat in May.
Anticipating significant life changes, including a potential relocation to the Middle East, O’Sullivan remains open to various possibilities, underscoring the dynamic nature of his future endeavors within and beyond the realm of snooker.
