Robin Williams’s offspring have reactivated the deceased actor and comedian’s inactive Instagram profile in response to a surge in unauthorized AI simulations of their father. Williams passed away on August 11, 2014, at 63 years old, following an autopsy that revealed he had Lewy body dementia.

Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams articulated in a recent post on Monday, marking the first activity on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account since July 31, 2014, their intention to maintain a secure and reliable space where shared stories, photos, videos, and memories genuinely honor his legacy with warmth and sincerity. They aim to showcase their father’s exceptional talent and humor to the public, reminiscing on the moments that brought laughter to them and countless others, preserving his remarkable life and contributions that continue to inspire and entertain globally.

Williams enjoyed a successful career spanning film, television, and theater. He gained initial fame through the television series “Mork & Mindy” (1978-1982) and starred in renowned movies such as “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). Notably, he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992).

In recent times, various AI-generated videos depicting Williams have surfaced online, featuring him in podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and even commenting on the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” Many of these videos were produced using OpenAI’s video creation and social media tool, Sora.

Following concerns raised by family estates over the app’s misuse to generate videos of public figures engaging in inappropriate actions, OpenAI discontinued Sora in March.

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has been vocal in her opposition to AI recreations of her father. She previously urged fans to cease sending her AI-generated videos of her dad, labeling them as “disgusting” and asserting that it does not align with his wishes. In a recent Instagram story, she explained that reactivating her father’s Instagram account serves as a strategic move in combating AI exploitation.

While actor Matthew Lawrence expressed interest in reviving Williams’s voice using AI to honor its iconic status for a generation, he emphasized the importance of obtaining the Williams family’s consent before pursuing such a project. Similarly, Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has also condemned the usage of her father’s likeness in AI applications.

An AI version of the late actor Val Kilmer, who passed away last year at 65 years old, has been slated to feature in the upcoming film “As Deep As the Grave,” with approval from Kilmer’s estate and appropriate compensation arrangements in place.
