Myrtle Cobin led a remarkable life overcoming challenges, establishing herself as a successful career woman, and a dedicated mother.
Born on May 12, 1868, into a struggling farming family, Myrtle’s physical uniqueness captivated both her parents and doctors. While her upper body appeared typical, her lower half presented a rare anomaly with two pelvises and four legs, earning her the nickname ‘Four-Legged Girl from Texas’.
After her birth, medical professionals were perplexed by her condition, sparking local interest and media coverage. Seizing the opportunity, Myrtle’s father, William H. Corbin, a former soldier in need of financial support, recognized the potential for profit in showcasing his daughter’s uniqueness.
William began exhibiting Myrtle at just one month old, charging spectators for a glimpse at the extraordinary infant. Despite the controversial nature of this decision, William and his wife, Nancy, claimed the funds generated would secure Myrtle’s education and future success.
As Myrtle’s story gained traction, she became a sensation beyond Lincoln County, with William strategically marketing her differences through various platforms. While the family resided primarily in Blount County, Myrtle was showcased at fairs and side shows nationwide, captivating audiences with her extraordinary physique.
Although Myrtle’s second pair of legs were less developed, adorned with three toes each, she skillfully incorporated them into her performances. Over time, the public became more aware of her unique attributes, including her ability to menstruate from both uteruses.
At the age of 14, Myrtle caught the attention of showman P.T. Barnum, joining his museum of curiosities as a popular act commanding a substantial wage. However, the constant scrutiny of circus life took its toll, leading Myrtle to find solace in her relationship with medical student James C. Bicknell, whom she later married.
Following her marriage, Myrtle experienced a surprising pregnancy on her left side, ultimately leading to a difficult decision to undergo an abortion for her well-being. Despite this hardship, Myrtle and James went on to have more children, fulfilling the prediction of pregnancies on both sides, albeit with tragic outcomes for most of their offspring.
After a period of quiet family life, Myrtle reentered showbiz, commanding a significant wage for her appearances. Eventually, she retired from the spotlight and passed away on May 6, 1928, at the age of 59, due to complications from a skin infection on one of her four legs.
Myrtle’s legacy as a successful career woman, wife, and mother defied societal norms, proving that even with a severe handicap, women could achieve remarkable accomplishments in the 19th century.
