Professional Golfer Matt Fitzpatrick shared a light-hearted moment during the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth when his ball was taken by two young spectators, leading to a delay due to a thunderstorm.
Fitzpatrick, 31, faced a challenge on the 18th hole after an errant tee shot. His caddie suggested waiting until after the break to search for the ball to avoid potential interference from spectators.
Concerned about the ball being taken, Fitzpatrick sought advice from tournament officials. Eventually, the ball was indeed taken by the young spectators.
Upon investigating the incident, Fitzpatrick found out that his ball had been nabbed by the two boys. Consequently, he had to take a drop in the same area, resulting in a bogey but potentially saving him from a worse outcome.
Reflecting on the incident, Fitzpatrick humorously remarked that the young thieves may have inadvertently helped him by preventing a more challenging situation. He finished the round with a six-under par 66, placing him two strokes behind the leader Ludvig Aberg.
The championship faced an 85-minute delay due to thunderstorms, causing some players to not complete their rounds before play was halted due to fading light.
