Police are urging individuals who may have been targeted by a convicted rapist to come forward as part of an ongoing investigation. Jonathan Carl, 42, was recently sentenced to 17 years for rape and reckless transmission of HIV. Authorities revealed that Carl had made contact with around 400 men through dating apps like Grindr and Scruff, with a focus on individuals in the east London and Essex areas. Detectives believe there are 318 men who need to be identified and tested for HIV in connection with Carl’s activities.
During a media briefing at New Scotland Yard, Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford described Carl as a predatory individual, emphasizing the need for potential victims to come forward. Acting Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Bishop highlighted the challenges in assessing the total number of victims due to Carl’s targeting of vulnerable individuals, including those unsure of their sexuality or engaging in their first sexual encounters.
Carl, described as prolific and self-serving, was found guilty of rape and grievous bodily harm. He now faces a 15-year sexual prevention order mandating disclosure of his HIV status and notification to authorities regarding new sexual partners. The investigation continues as police work to identify and support those affected by Carl’s harmful actions.
