A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the area. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) mentioned that it is premature to determine if the incident will impact the project’s timeline. The fire occurred near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday evening, prompting an immediate response from the local fire department, as confirmed by Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier.
The NHC stated that the materials were originally meant for an eight-unit public housing initiative. Following the fire, the corporation is awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and relevant authorities to evaluate the extent of the destruction. The completion date for the eight-unit complex is set for June 2027, and the NHC spokesperson indicated that it is too early to ascertain the potential impact of the fire on the project’s timeline.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson mentioned in an email that there is currently no information available for public disclosure or confirmation of any ongoing investigation into the incident.
