Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios made a public announcement on Wednesday, disclosing that he had tested positive for cocaine, resulting in a provisional suspension from professional tennis. The 31-year-old Australian, who reached the 2022 singles final but has struggled with injuries, currently holds a ranking of 919th after limited participation in Grand Slam tournaments.

Kyrgios took to social media to address the situation, admitting to failing a drug test in Mallorca where he tested positive for cocaine during a tournament in June. He expressed remorse, acknowledging his error and accepting full responsibility for his actions. Cocaine is prohibited as a performance-enhancing substance in competitive sports, with varying penalties depending on whether it is used during events or outside of competition.

The tennis star has previously opened up about his mental health challenges, exacerbated by issues with alcohol and substance abuse. Kyrgios revealed the emotional turmoil he has faced, particularly as he grapples with the realization that his professional tennis career may be nearing its end due to persistent injuries.

Despite his recent struggles, Kyrgios received a wild card entry to compete in the doubles event at Wimbledon last month, where he and partner Alexander Bublik were eliminated in the opening round. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has taken charge of Kyrgios’ case, confirming that his drug test was conducted on June 22 and the positive result was verified on July 17, following his participation at Wimbledon.

A mandatory provisional suspension was imposed on August 4, which Kyrgios has not contested, according to the ITIA.
