“NHS Urges Parents: Follow Martha’s Rule for Child Hospital Care”

Published on

The National Health Service (NHS) has issued a crucial reminder to parents about a significant rule known as Martha’s Rule. This life-saving protocol aims to promptly identify any decline in hospital patients and is applicable to all individuals receiving care. In a direct message to parents, the NHS emphasizes the importance of trusting their instincts and speaking up if they observe any concerning changes in their child’s condition while in the hospital.

According to NHS England, Martha’s Rule is a patient safety initiative designed to enhance the early detection of deterioration by prioritizing the concerns raised by patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare staff. This initiative was developed following the tragic passing of Martha Mills and other similar cases related to the management of deteriorating health conditions. Central to Martha’s Rule is the right for patients and their families to request a prompt review if they have apprehensions about the worsening health status of their loved ones.

Recognizing that those closest to the patient may be the first to notice subtle changes indicating deterioration, Martha’s Rule stresses the significance of actively listening to and addressing the concerns raised by patients, families, and caregivers. This initiative is being implemented in both adult and pediatric inpatient settings across England.

Martha Mills tragically succumbed to sepsis in 2021 after being hospitalized for a pancreatic injury sustained in a cycling accident. Despite her family’s repeated alerts about her deteriorating condition, their concerns were not adequately addressed. A subsequent investigation in 2023 revealed that Martha, aged 13, could have potentially survived if she had been transferred to intensive care sooner. In response to this and similar cases involving the handling of clinical deterioration, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, in collaboration with NHS England, committed to introducing Martha’s Rule throughout the NHS.

The core principles of Martha’s Rule emphasize the importance of vigilance and proactive communication from parents. The NHS advises parents to watch for specific signs of deterioration in their child’s health.

To facilitate rapid reviews, hospitals offer a dedicated service accessible 24/7 by calling a designated number. A rapid review involves a specialized team collaborating with the patient’s care providers to promptly address any necessary treatments or further assessments.

The implementation of Martha’s Rule underscores the NHS’s commitment to enhancing patient safety and ensuring that concerns about deteriorating health conditions are promptly addressed and acted upon.
