Michelle Tolley was overjoyed when she received an award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her dedicated campaign efforts. However, there was an unexpected surprise awaiting her.
A passionate advocate at 60 years old (or as she humorously puts it, “59 plus one”), Michelle has been tirelessly fighting for justice for over 30,000 individuals impacted by the NHS infected blood scandal, seeking answers and accountability.
In the previous year, Michelle was honored with a Pride of Britain Special Recognition Award alongside fellow activists Andrew Evans and Jason Evans.
During the awards ceremony, while watching midwife Agnes Nisbett receive a prize, hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo announced that Agnes was being rewarded with a cruise holiday from P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the awards. To everyone’s surprise, it was revealed that all winners, including Michelle, would also be receiving the same prize in 2024.
Reflecting on her journey of battling health challenges and advocating for others, Michelle was deeply touched by this unexpected gesture of appreciation. Infected with hepatitis C after a blood transfusion following the birth of her first child in 1987, Michelle endured years of undiagnosed symptoms and delays in treatment before finally receiving proper care.
Motivated by her experiences, Michelle channeled her anger into positive action, founding support groups, collaborating with organizations like the Hepatitis C Trust, and contributing to the official government inquiry.
After years of hard work, the opportunity for a well-deserved holiday was a welcome surprise for Michelle and her husband Dean, who hadn’t traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984.
The couple decided to embark on a Canary Islands cruise in May, coinciding with their 40th wedding anniversary. P&O Cruises went the extra mile by arranging a vow renewal ceremony for them, complete with flowers, photos, and special dining experiences.
Sailing on board the Ventura ship, Michelle, whose only previous sailing experience was as a child, was awestruck by the luxury and amenities onboard. From indulging in fine dining to exploring various destinations like Madeira and the Canary Islands, the couple made the most of their cruise experience.
Their adventures ashore included exploring banana tree-filled landscapes in Madeira and taking a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas, where they enjoyed the vibrant Old Town and learned about the city’s history.
In Lisbon, their final destination, Michelle and Dean took a coach and river cruise, soaking in city views and iconic landmarks along the River Tagus.
Thrilled by their cruise experience, Michelle and Dean are eager to repeat the journey, praising the exceptional service, delectable food, and friendly staff aboard the Ventura. Michelle encourages others to consider a cruise holiday, highlighting the fantastic facilities and hospitality that make it a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
