Michelle Tolley was elated when she received an accolade at the prestigious Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her dedicated advocacy work. However, an unexpected surprise awaited her. A passionate campaigner, the 60-year-old (or as she humorously puts it, “59 plus one”) has been tirelessly seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow advocates Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain ceremony. During the event, while observing midwife Agnes Nisbett being honored on stage, Michelle and the other winners were stunned to learn that they too were each being awarded a cruise holiday by the new headline partner of the awards, P&O Cruises.
Reflecting on her journey, Michelle’s health struggles and unwavering commitment to supporting fellow victims and holding authorities accountable have been defining aspects of her life. Infected with hepatitis C from a blood transfusion after the birth of her first child in 1987, she endured 28 years of undiagnosed suffering before receiving proper medical attention.
Turning her anger into action, Michelle established a support group for affected individuals, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and contributed to the official government inquiry. The prospect of a relaxation-filled vacation was a welcomed respite for Michelle and her husband, who had not traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984.
Booking a Canary Islands cruise for May, Michelle hinted at renewing their vows during the trip to P&O Cruises. To her delight, the cruise line not only facilitated the vow renewal but also showered them with special treats, including a beautiful bouquet, professional photographs, framed memories, and exquisite meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle, whose only previous sailing experience was as a child, was overwhelmed by the grandeur of the vessel. Embracing their voyage with open hearts, the couple explored the ship’s amenities, indulged in sumptuous dining, shopped, swam, and enjoyed live entertainment while also venturing ashore to Madeira and the Canary Islands.
Their excursions included a memorable tour with a local taxi driver named Manuel in Madeira and a fun-filled tuk-tuk adventure in Las Palmas. In Lisbon, the couple embarked on a coach and river cruise, immersing themselves in the city’s scenic beauty and historical landmarks.
By the end of their holiday, Michelle and Dean were captivated by the cruising experience and eagerly anticipated their next voyage. Michelle fondly recalls feeling like royalty aboard the Ventura, praising the exceptional service and warm hospitality.
