“Newport Tops as Worst City for Fly-Tipping”

Published on

Newport, a city in Wales, has seen a significant increase in fly-tipping incidents in recent years, making it the worst area in the country for this illegal activity. According to data from the Welsh Government, Newport reported the highest number of fly-tipping cases in both 2023 and 2024, totaling 8,139 incidents, which is 37% more than Cardiff, the second-highest city.

Although the number of fly-tipping incidents slightly decreased to 7,318 in 2024 and 2025, there was still a 17% rise compared to 2022. Residents in Newport expressed little surprise at these figures, as fly-tipping in the city has surged by 63% since 2019.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently voiced support for the Great British Spring Clean initiative, aimed at tackling fly-tipping across the UK. Despite efforts, data obtained through a freedom of information request revealed that Newport City Council issued only 124 fines in 2024, despite investigating approximately 7,300 reports.

Additionally, only 10 fly-tipping incidents in Newport led to successful prosecutions during the same period. Newport Council stated that enforcement actions had increased by 23.6% from April 2024 to March 2025, potentially contributing to the rise in reported cases.

Local residents, such as landscape gardener Rhys Warrilow from Peterstone village, expressed concern over the prevalence of fly-tipping, citing issues with waste disposal regulations since the Covid-19 pandemic. The council’s shift to less frequent waste collections and restricted access to tips has led to challenges in proper waste disposal, prompting some individuals to resort to illegal dumping.

Newport Council emphasized the importance of recycling to meet government targets and avoid potential fines. The council highlighted the need for increased recycling efforts to reduce the burden on waste disposal services and enhance environmental sustainability.

Despite council efforts to combat fly-tipping, challenges persist in areas like Peterstone, where security measures, such as cameras, have been tampered with, hindering enforcement actions. Residents and local officials continue to advocate for stricter measures to address the issue and preserve the community’s environment.

In response to ongoing challenges, Newport Council has ramped up enforcement measures, including issuing fines and warnings to offenders. Councillor Yvonne Forsey reiterated the council’s commitment to combatting fly-tipping, emphasizing the significant progress made in enforcement actions and the reduction in reported incidents compared to previous years.
