“NASA Plans Historic Crewed Moon Mission in 2023”

Published on

NASA has revealed intentions to launch astronauts on a mission around the Moon, with the rocket prepared for the journey. This mission would mark the first crewed lunar expedition in 50 years and could pave the way for future Mars exploration. The US space agency, in a recent announcement, shared details about the upcoming Artemis II mission, which aims to send four astronauts on a lunar orbit next year to advance preparations for lunar surface missions and eventual voyages to Mars.

Initially scheduled for a launch by the end of April, NASA now aims to move the mission up to February, with aspirations for a potential lunar landing as early as 2027. The ten-day mission will involve astronauts testing the spacecraft and systems crucial for upcoming Moon landings. This will be the second launch under the Artemis program, designed not only for crewed lunar landings but also for establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

Lakiesha Hawkins, an acting deputy associate administrator at NASA, emphasized the historic significance of the mission, describing it as a pivotal moment in human space exploration. Artemis Launch Director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson confirmed that the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, tasked with carrying astronauts, is nearly ready for deployment. Final preparations involve the integration of the crew capsule, Orion, with the SLS, along with concluding ground tests.

The inaugural Artemis mission in November 2022, lasting 25 days, successfully orbited an uncrewed spacecraft around the Moon before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. Despite encountering heatshield issues during re-entry, which have since been resolved, the mission demonstrated overall success.

The upcoming Artemis II mission will not entail a lunar landing for NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen. However, they will become the first crew to journey beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. Lead Artemis II flight director Jeff Radigan revealed that the astronauts will venture at least 5,000 nautical miles (9,200 km) past the Moon, marking a significant milestone in space exploration.

During the mission, the crew will reside in the Orion capsule atop the SLS rocket. Post-launch, the rocket stages separate, and Orion deploys its solar panels to generate power. The astronauts will conduct system checks, engage in spacecraft maneuvering drills, and head towards the Moon, a journey expected to take four days while continuously testing equipment readiness for future missions.
