A male suspect faces charges following a series of car fires at the residence of a Member of Parliament in Scarborough, according to Toronto law enforcement. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, was taken into custody on Sunday. The charges against him include arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable materials, and violation of probation terms, as stated in a police press release issued on Friday.
Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata suspected to be linked to the incident was confiscated. Authorities are seeking information on the whereabouts of the vehicle in the days leading up to the alleged arson. Police are also on the lookout for a second suspect connected to the case.
The incident took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid, who represents the federal constituency of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. On August 27, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway, poured accelerant on them, ignited two vehicles, causing them to catch fire, and then fled the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the flames, according to law enforcement.
Zahid expressed gratitude to Toronto police following the arrest, stating, “I welcome news of an arrest and charges related to the arson incident outside my home on August 27th.” She also mentioned that the motive behind the incident remains unknown, and she will refrain from further comments until more information is disclosed.
Zahid, a Liberal Member of Parliament since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association. The arson incident elicited strong reactions from various politicians, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
