Migrant Care Worker Shares Heartfelt Perspective on Contribution and Recognition

Taking care of your loved ones is my passion. I offer comfort, support, and companionship to your parents, grandparents, and cherished family members. Each day, I am there to calm their fears, hold their trembling hands, and bring solace during the silent hours of the night. I assist them in regaining their strength, appetite, and sense of humanity.

Being a migrant care worker is not just a job to me; it is an integral part of who I am. Arriving in the UK as an asylum seeker seeking safety and a fresh start, I found purpose in caring for others. The gratitude and respect I receive from the individuals and families I assist fuel my dedication and sense of fulfillment.

Despite my tireless efforts and contributions, I sometimes feel unnoticed by the society I serve. I work tirelessly, often extending my shifts to ensure the well-being of those under my care. I play a crucial role in filling positions that others are reluctant to take on, keeping care facilities and hospitals operational.

The proposal to delay the eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain for migrant carers like me by 15 years is disheartening. After dedicating years of service, sacrifice, and loyalty, being told that I do not belong yet is deeply painful. We are not seeking special treatment or accolades; all we ask for is fairness and recognition of our humanity.

We, migrant care workers, do not wish to be perceived as burdens when we carry the weight of responsibility with grace and compassion. We bring stability, respect, and a desire to contribute positively to the community we serve. We yearn for a future where our dedication is acknowledged and valued promptly.

To the UK, I express from the depths of my heart: we are not here to take but to give, and we have been giving tirelessly since our arrival. All we desire is to be seen, appreciated, and supported in the same way we care for others.
