Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed a mix of “pride” and “humility” upon being promoted within the Order of Canada on Friday. The ceremony at Rideau Hall saw Fox elevated to the companion level by Gov. Gen. Louise Arbour, recognizing his impactful global advocacy and candidness regarding Parkinson’s.

Reflecting on the honor, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada and appreciation for its values and progress throughout his life. He emphasized his Canadian roots, love for the country’s music, and cultural influences that have shaped him into a uniquely Canadian individual at 65.

Parkinson’s, a degenerative nervous system condition characterized by tremors and mobility issues, has been a focal point of Fox’s life since publicly disclosing his diagnosis in 1998. The actor has been actively involved in fundraising for Parkinson’s research and has openly discussed the challenges faced by individuals living with the disease.

Acknowledging Canada’s contributions to Parkinson’s research, Fox highlighted the country’s advancements in treatments such as deep brain stimulation. He was among 51 individuals honored within the Order of Canada, with Arbour commending each recipient for their dedication to making a positive impact through their talents and actions.

In addition to Fox, notable figures like Yusuf Altintas, Nada Jabado, Stephen Poloz, Ruth Elsie Abernethy, Susanne Craig, Colin Roswell Clarke, Marcelle Dubois, and Patrick Joseph Lahey were recognized for their exceptional achievements and contributions in various fields as they were inducted into the Order of Canada.
