Cabinet minister Pat McFadden criticized Donald Trump for his assertion that London desires sharia law, calling it a misunderstanding of the city. The comments from Keir Starmer’s top minister came following Trump’s criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan during a speech at the UN General Assembly. Trump referred to Khan as a “terrible” mayor and suggested a shift to sharia law in the city.
McFadden, speaking on BBC Breakfast, emphasized that London operates under British law, not sharia law. He praised London as a vital asset to the UK, highlighting its economic importance and cultural richness. The Work and Pensions Secretary dismissed Trump’s remarks as a misinterpretation of London’s essence.
A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump’s comments as “appalling and bigoted,” asserting London’s status as a leading global city. Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended Khan, emphasizing the mayor’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and improving various aspects of London life.
Labour MPs, including Dame Emily Thornberry, Rupa Huq, and Rosena Allin-Khan, stood in support of Sadiq Khan, denouncing Trump’s statements as untrue and Islamophobic. They reaffirmed London’s multiculturalism and rejected any insinuations of introducing sharia law in the city. Allin-Khan called for the US ambassador to be summoned over Trump’s remarks, emphasizing London’s inclusive values under Khan’s leadership.
