A man wielding a crossbow has passed away following a confrontation with law enforcement after a rural pub was engulfed in flames.
Authorities were summoned to Chequers pub in Bedfordshire on Friday evening due to concerns about the well-being of an individual inside. Shortly after their arrival at 10:15 am, a fire erupted. The man was reported to be armed with the crossbow, prompting extensive efforts to ensure the safety of everyone present, leading to the evacuation of nearby residences.
The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was hospitalized with self-inflicted injuries and succumbed on Sunday night. His family has been notified, and the case has been handed over to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
A police representative stated that specialized officers, including negotiators, were dispatched upon learning about the individual’s possession of a crossbow. Following a series of precautions, the man exited the premises around 12:45 pm and sustained self-inflicted injuries before being taken to the hospital, where he later passed away.
The authorities mentioned that investigations are ongoing, and the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for further review in accordance with standard procedures.
Local residents fondly described the 44-year-old establishment as a friendly and traditional country pub that had been a cornerstone of the community for many years, renowned for its delicious homemade meals.
