A man has been sentenced to more than ten years in prison for attempting to murder his girlfriend after she discovered his communication with other women. Michael Cosgrove, 46, strangled his partner twice following a New Order concert in Manchester last year. He threatened her, leaving her unconscious and jumped from a window upon police arrival in Stockport.
Despite denying attempted murder, Cosgrove was sentenced at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. The court heard that the couple had been arguing due to Cosgrove’s messages to other women. The incident occurred after a seemingly pleasant concert outing turned violent as they returned home.
During the altercation, Cosgrove became violent when the victim expressed a desire to end the relationship. He physically assaulted her, strangled her, and threatened to kill both of them. The victim, struggling to breathe, tried to escape but was overpowered and rendered unconscious.
A neighbor, alarmed by the noise, called the police and recorded the incident. Photographs presented in court revealed the extent of the victim’s injuries, including bruising and a fractured rib. Cosgrove, found barefoot upon arrest, had injuries consistent with jumping from a window.
The victim, who has since moved and experienced ongoing anxiety and depression, expressed feeling betrayed and humiliated by Cosgrove’s actions during the trial. In a victim impact statement, she described the lasting impact of the traumatic event on her life.
Cosgrove was convicted of attempted murder and intentional strangulation following a trial. Despite claims of remorse from his defense, the judge noted his lack of genuine remorse and failure to acknowledge his domestic abuse perpetration. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a restraining order issued against him.
Detective Constable Chris Payne of Greater Manchester Police commended the victim for her courage throughout the investigation, emphasizing the importance of her role in securing justice against her abuser. Payne expressed hope that the outcome brings a sense of closure and justice for the victim.
