Maltesers have settled the long-standing debate on the proper way to enjoy the popular chocolate treat. A recent survey found that more than half of Maltesers fans prefer to savor the treat by sucking on it without chewing, while a quarter opt to delicately nibble off the chocolate coating before consuming the center, and another quarter choose to bite the sweet in half and eat each piece separately.
Despite these varied approaches, the brand’s scientists have emphasized that the chocolate has been designed to be consumed in a specific manner to enhance its flavor profile and offer a complete sensory experience. Megan Rushman, the brand’s associate product development scientist, explained that the malted interior of the Malteser serves a dual purpose.
Not only does it provide that distinctive satisfying crunch, but it also assists in breaking down the chocolate, preventing the sticky feeling sometimes experienced in the mouth from solid chocolate. To fully appreciate the flavor, Megan recommends placing the entire Malteser in your mouth before biting down.
This method ensures that the chocolate spreads across a larger area of your palate, creating a multi-sensory experience by stimulating both taste receptors and hearing with the characteristic crunch. This revelation coincides with the launch of Maltesers’ new white chocolate version, with Megan highlighting the unique texture and balance between the chocolate and malt center that makes the treat so beloved.
A survey of 2,000 Maltesers enthusiasts revealed that those who deviate from the recommended method by sucking on the ball do so because they enjoy how the malt dissolves in their mouth. Another 23 percent prefer this approach to prolong the experience.
Individuals who opt to nibble on the treat mentioned that they appreciate the dual bursts of flavor, while 24 percent prefer to savor the treat slowly. On average, respondents believe that 22 seconds is the perfect duration to relish the taste.
While 53 percent believe Maltesers are best enjoyed at room temperature, 31 percent prefer them chilled straight from the fridge. Fans also indicated that the ideal time to indulge in Maltesers is between 7 pm and 9 pm, preferably while watching TV (57 percent) or as a post-dinner treat (20 percent).
Joining the discussion, Kate Lawler and Boj shared their perspectives on the best way to enjoy Maltesers through playful banter. Kate expressed her preference for crunching down on the treat, while Boj argued for nibbling the outside. Kate acknowledged that whether you nibble, melt, or consume the treat whole, the enjoyment lies in the playful exploration of different methods.
