Keir Starmer has expressed that his administration is making progress in preventing pub closures by enabling communities to rescue struggling pubs.
Under a new initiative aimed at revitalizing struggling high streets, individuals will have the opportunity to purchase cherished local establishments like pubs. The timeframe for raising funds will be extended from six to 12 months to allow locals more time to gather the necessary resources.
This development is a victory for the campaign to safeguard Britain’s pubs, many of which are facing challenges staying afloat due to escalating expenses. The Mirror has been advocating for increased support for communities to acquire their local pubs, in addition to urging ministers to establish a support fund for struggling pubs.
Mr. Starmer conveyed to the Mirror: “There’s nothing quite like enjoying a pint at your neighborhood pub on a Friday night. Our local pubs are a source of pride for us as Britons. However, thousands are shutting down annually, becoming eyesores on our streets.
“We are making a positive impact. We will empower communities with new capabilities to rescue and revitalize British pubs.”
This announcement coincides with the Prime Minister’s anticipated launch of a new “Pride in Place” program, designed to assist communities nationwide in rejuvenating their high streets.
The proposal includes provisions for councils to reject unwanted betting shops, vape stores, and sham barber shops. Communities will be granted enhanced authority to acquire shuttered shops and dilapidated businesses through compulsory purchase orders.
Moreover, local residents will have the opportunity to purchase cherished spaces such as pubs, tennis courts, and parks to help rejuvenate them through the community right-to-buy scheme.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed commented: “As individuals step outside their homes, they witness the challenges facing their communities. They observe closed-down pubs, declining high streets, and deteriorating local areas.
“Yes, communities are facing difficulties – but they are not giving up. They are diligently working towards improvement, and we are standing by them.
“The government is entrusting power to the residents so that they can determine the best course of action to restore pride in their neighborhoods, rather than dictating from Westminster.
“This is what true patriotism entails: strengthening our communities and opting for renewal over division.”
