Jenrick’s statements, allegedly made at a dinner event in March, highlighted his observations of Handsworth, describing it as an area plagued by litter and poor integration. He emphasized his desire for a more harmoniously integrated society, advocating for people to live together rather than in isolation based on race or beliefs.

Responding to Jenrick’s remarks, independent MP Ayoub Khan condemned the portrayal of Handsworth as lacking in diversity, attributing the challenges faced by the community to long-standing economic struggles exacerbated by governmental neglect and mismanagement. Former Labour MP Khalid Mahmood echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the area’s vibrant diversity and attributing its issues to broader socioeconomic factors and local governance failures rather than cultural integration.

Labour Party Chair Anna Turley criticized Jenrick for reducing individuals to their skin color and questioned the compatibility of his comments with the party’s values of inclusivity. Hope Not Hate’s campaigns director, Georgie Laming, warned against divisive rhetoric that could fuel far-right narratives and urged for more responsible language in fostering community cohesion.

Despite calls for clarification, Jenrick’s team declined to comment on the matter.
