Iran Plans “Exclusion Zone” in Strait of Hormuz

Published on

Iran’s new top official in charge of the Supreme National Security Council has announced plans to establish an “exclusion zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz to restrict vessels trying to pass through the waterway. Mohsen Rezaei made the statement on Iran’s state broadcaster without providing detailed information, following the U.S. military’s strike on three Iranian oil tankers in response to Iran’s missile attack on American warships. This latest move by Iran is seen as a significant escalation given its previous actions targeting commercial ships at sea.

The exclusion zone is expected to be declared in the upcoming days and weeks, starting from the U.S. naval blockade line, extending towards the Strait of Hormuz, and further into the Persian Gulf. Rezaei emphasized that any ship identified in this specified area with intentions to transit through the strait will face sanctions from Iran. The exact boundaries of the U.S. blockade, aimed at Iranian ports to impede oil shipments, remain unclear. The U.S. military has reported deploying over 20 warships to support the blockade, resulting in the redirection of 92 commercial vessels and the disabling of three.

Following the breakdown of negotiations and ongoing intermittent hostilities, the U.S. has intensified its efforts to increase pressure on Iran. In response, Iran continues to target ships attempting to navigate the strait, leveraging its control over this critical maritime route in the conflict that began over six months ago with U.S. and Israeli military actions.

Iran claimed to have struck an unmanned U.S. vessel as it approached the Strait of Hormuz, a claim promptly dismissed by the U.S. military as false. This incident marks the latest clash in the renewed series of confrontations between the two nations. Amidst the escalating tensions, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand condemned Iran’s destabilizing activities and affirmed collaboration with international partners to maintain pressure on Iran.

The recent attacks and counterattacks between the U.S. and Iran have reignited hostilities after a period of relative calm. The Trump administration has adopted a dual strategy of responding militarily to threats in the strait while targeting foreign financial institutions handling Iran’s finances. Despite facing economic challenges and sanctions, Iran’s new hardline leadership remains steadfast in its stance.

Iran’s ability to circumvent sanctions and maintain oil shipments amidst the U.S. blockade underscores its resilience. The unresolved issue of Iran’s nuclear program, a key factor in the conflict’s genesis, remains unaddressed since the collapse of negotiations in June. Diplomatic efforts by major Western powers to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for non-compliance with nuclear obligations have faced hurdles.

The strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz as a vital route for global energy transport has come into focus amidst the ongoing tensions. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted the crucial role of the strait, noting the passage of an average of nine million barrels of oil daily. While efforts are made to ensure oil flows through the strait, the presence of the U.S. navy remains pivotal in safeguarding tanker traffic and deterring potential Iranian threats. Iran’s assertion of normal oil trade operations amidst the conflict underscores its determination amid the heightened geopolitical pressure.
