“Hazardous Highway 41 in Manitoba Sparks Safety Concerns”

Published on

Residents in two communities in southwestern Manitoba are expressing frustration over the hazardous conditions of Highway 41, characterized by large potholes and missing sections of pavement. The highway, located in the rural municipality of Ellice-Archie to the northwest of Brandon, connects McAuley, St-Lazare, and Binscarth, stretching from the Trans-Canada Highway to the Yellowhead Highway.

According to Ellice-Archie Reeve Barry Lowes, the road poses significant dangers to drivers, with instances of damaged vehicles reported. The challenges on this highway date back a decade, with past flooding events in 2011 and 2014 submerging sections of the roadway.

Despite ongoing issues, the highway remains heavily utilized by farmers, truckers, and campers. Lowes highlighted the extensive disrepair, including numerous potholes of varying sizes, missing pavement chunks, and marked defects along the road shoulders. Notably, a section approximately 15 kilometers south of McAuley exhibits severe pavement damage affecting both lanes.

Lowes has persistently urged the government to address the road’s condition, emphasizing the urgent need for repaving. Recent efforts by maintenance crews involve patching up sections of the highway, with Manitoba Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor acknowledging upcoming repair plans to address safety concerns.

Business owner Dolores Fouillard in St-Lazare echoed concerns about the deteriorating state of Highway 41, emphasizing the need for comprehensive road reconstruction rather than temporary fixes. She pointed out the increasing traffic flow, particularly from workers commuting to a nearby potash mine in Rocanville, Saskatchewan.

Fouillard expressed worries about the safety implications for school buses and emphasized the urgent need for road improvements to mitigate potential accidents. The community is calling for long-term solutions to address the persistent hazards posed by the deteriorating highway.
