“Hamilton’s Critique Alters Brad Pitt’s F1 Movie Role”

Toto Wolff revealed how Lewis Hamilton directly informed Brad Pitt that he was deemed “too advanced in age” to depict a Formula One driver contending for World Championships on the silver screen. This straightforward conversation, which left the renowned Hollywood actor unimpressed, prompted a revision of the screenplay for the upcoming movie.

Initially, Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, in the F1 film was envisioned as a seasoned racer challenging the top competitors for a championship victory. However, in the final script, he makes a comeback to Grand Prix racing in his fifties, driving for the struggling fictional team APX GP alongside the emerging talent Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris.

This significant alteration occurred after a gathering with Wolff, Hamilton, and others in the early stages of the project.

During the Autosport Business Exchange event in New York, Wolff reminisced, “In the beginning, I was fortunate. I met numerous high-profile individuals, but one dinner we had with the director Joe, Jerry Bruckheimer, Lewis, Brad Pitt, Susie, and me.”

He continued, “We had dinner at our residence in Oxford, and it was surreal when Brad Pitt arrived and thanked us for having him over. That was quite an extraordinary experience.”

Wolff elaborated on the change in direction for Pitt’s character, stating, “Initially, the concept was for him (Pitt’s character, Hayes) to be a driver vying for a World Championship.”

He added, “But then Lewis pointed out, ‘That won’t work; you’re too old to be a Formula One driver.’ Brad was displeased with this assessment as he believed he was in his prime for such a role.”

The F1 film, with Hamilton serving as an executive producer, achieved remarkable success, impressing critics, generating excitement among a new audience, and shattering box office records to become the highest-grossing sports film ever, amassing £467 million ($628m) globally.

The positive feedback from influential figures in the racing community was also heartening.

Formula 1 enthusiasts can catch every practice, qualifying session, and race live with Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering an introductory discount of £336, inclusive of Sky Sports access, around 100 TV channels, and complimentary subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.

“We, including all the F1 drivers and team principals, watched the premiere in Monaco during the Grand Prix, and we were impressed,” Wolff remarked. “There was nothing not to like. It provides great entertainment, and the revenue it has generated is exceptional.”
